Douglas Piper

Born in 1960, Douglas Piper started playing bridge at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh where he obtained a BSc in 1983. He began teaching bridge full time in 1989 and was instrumental in the setting up of the Scottish Bridge Union Teaching Scheme for Schools. He is the Education Officer for the Eastern District of the SBU.

Douglas played for the Scottish U25 team in 1985 and won his first full cap in 1996. He has since played many times for Scotland. A member of the winning Camrose (home international) team in 1996, he has represented Scotland in the European and World Championships. Douglas has also won most of the Scottish domestic trophies including the National Pairs (twice) and the Scottish Cup twice. He won the Gold Cup, Britain's premier event in 2006.

Is he a good bridge teacher well his students last year managed to secure 1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th and 11th position in the Hugh Kelsey cup (over 200 entrants) the simultaneous pairs event for bona fida beginners throughout Scotland in 2006, an unprecedented result. This year his former pupils the Pied Pipers are challenging for promotion to the 1st division of the East of Scotland league while his newer former pupils the Rats (the irony is not lost on him) are challenging to get promotion into the 4th division. Douglas wishes both teams well.
